Welcome Phase Two!

Yet another milestone for the Sydney Tar Ponds and Coke Ovens Remediation Project. De-watering in the area of the Tar Ponds between Ferry Street Bridge and the narrows of the north Pond started today. Pumping stations at Wash Brook and Coke Ovens Brook are still diverting water along the shores of the Tar Ponds. With the pumping system extended into the phase two section, water is now draining from that area and being released into the phase three section (closest to Sydney Harbour). Stop-logs are in place at the narrows to prevent the tide from entering the phase two construction area. When water in the construction area is controlled, contractors will begin the solidification and stabilization (S/S) of phase two. The treatment of sediment is expected to restart in late May, with completion of Phase two set for fall 2011. For more information, phone 902-567-1035.
